Drugs Used To Treat Iron Imbalances
deferoxamine (DFO) de fer' a ox a mean generic
Used in patients with transfusional iron overload such as patients with thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, MDS, cancer; administered subcutaneously. (Note some applications may be off-label) www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2001/16267s34lbl.pdf

deferasirox (de fer' a sir ox) generic
Used to remove excess iron that is in the body because of blood transfusions. Taken orally. Presently only approved for use in transfusional iron overload; clinical trials underway with hemochromatosis patients.

hydroxyurea (hye drox ee yoor ee' a) generic also known as hydroxycarbamide (hye drox ee carb a mide)
Used to slow or stop the growth of cancer cells. Also used for sickle cell anemia to reduce the production of sickle-shaped cells that result in a painful crisis.

Brand name: Hydrea Bristol-Myers Squibb

epoetin also called EPO: (e poe' e tin) generic Epoetin (alpha, beta, darbepoetin alfa) is a synthetic form of the hormone erythropoietin which is produced by the kidney and is essential in the production of red blood cells.

  • (Epoetin alfa) is manufactured and sold by Amgen only in the U.S.
  • Procrit
  • (Epoetin alfa) is manufactured by Amgen and sold by Ortho Biotech (an affiliate of Johnson & Johnson) under license from Amgen only in the U.S.
  • Eprex
  • (Epoetin alfa) is manufactured by Ortho Biologics LLC and sold by Janssen-Cilag and its partners (all affiliates of Johnson & Johnson). It is not available in the U.S. Eprex is only sold outside of the U.S. under the additional brand names Erypo, Epopen, Epoxitin and Globuren.
  • NeoRecormon
  • (Epoetin beta) is manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals and sold in Europe.
  • Aranesp
  • (darbepoetin alfa) is manufactured by Amgen and sold in the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia.
