Final Messages For Aran

Thank you to all who posted messages for Aran!

  • Hello ARAN,...

Best wishes and continued support from all the members of Iron Disorders Institute for your efforts! You demonstrate that with early detection and proper treatment, people with hemochromatosis can live extraordinary lives. The Marathon des Sables...WOW!

My hopes are for you to succeed in all that you are doing! Awareness about Hemochromatosis and other Iron Disorders will save many lives. In your journey may you fly like a bird and benefit from some heat stress research on birds. Results of recent studies showed that dietary vitamin C, with E & selenium have synergistic effects and that supplementing a combination of dietary vitamins C & E offers a good management practice to reduce heat stress-related problems. Exertional Heatstroke in other words has been controled & prevented by using nutrient supplementation of these antioxidants C & E.

    From Wikipedia

Hyperthermia, also known as heat stroke or sunstroke, is an acute condition which occurs when the body produces or absorbs more heat than it can dissipate. It is usually due to excessive exposure to heat. The heat-regulating mechanisms of the body eventually become overwhelmed and unable to effectively deal with the heat, and body temperature climbs uncontrollably. This is a serious medical emergency that requires immediate hospitalization.

Press reports cite that one man was evacuated to the hospital for hypothermia during stage 3 and I would be more inclined to believe that it was Hyperthermia that caused the problems.

I would really like to discuss your experiences and how you were able to regulate your heat. The use of vitamin C may cause you some concern more than the person that does not have Hemochromatosis. This is a good topic for discussion and review of the research.

Beat the heat & take care of your feet!
    I will e-you again soon.
    Dave Kitzman (Oregon)

Good Luck Aran and hurry home.

  • Just wanted to send you our best wishes on your marathon. We admire so much what you are doing for the HH cause. The kids think it's so cool to actually kinda "know" someone who is in this race. Have good weather and stay safe - we're cheering for you from California. Go Aran!

  • Aran,

We know that you won't be able to read this until the race is over, but we wanted to know that we are watching from here. Day one is over now, and you're doing well!

  • To all of you who wrote these wonderful messages;

Thank you so much for doing this, as I read them my eyes are watering and I know the keyboard is getting soaked. So many of you have come to know Aran and we are sure that the messages are now Global, which is what Aran and all of us want.

Re- The message from Dale & Cheryl: We, his parents, know very well that to tell Aran not to do something is inviting disaster, when he was a child and was asked "why did you do that?" his instant response was "cause I wanted to" and that is how he works.

All of us need the support of others in one way or another and you all have shown that support for which we are grateful.

Keep up the good work and thanks

    Mom and Dad Gordon

  • Aran,

  • Aran,

I want to take this opportunity to share with you how important your Marathon really is Aran. Being a hemochromatosis patient myself, you really are an inspiration to me to look after my health and become more active. May your journey be a positive one.

    Best of Luck,
    David L. Garrison

  • Hi Aran,

Aran I think this is wonderful what you are doing and even thought I can't run myself, I'll be behind you all the way and cheering for you.

    Best of Luck,
    Mary L. Apicella

  • Aran,

You are an inspiration to all those patients and their families that have had to deal with a hemochromatosis diagnosis. Your participation and completion of last year's Marathon Des Sables was a shining example how an individual can raise one's self above the negativity surrounding this insidious disorder.

I have all the confidence in the world (as many others do) that you will surpass last year's accomplishment: 373rd out 777. Your successful completion of 2006 Marathon Des Sables will only serve to prove that the first time around was only a jumping-off place for a vastly improved quality of live, regardless of having to live with your diagnosis for a lifetime.

There is no better way to show patients and their families that living with hemochromatosis does not have to be a disability, in fact, it can improve one's perspective on life, as you have shown.

Aran, I wish you "fair winds and following seas" during your next 245 kilometers.

    Jim Hines

  • Good Luck Aran. I appreciate you doing this incredible run and bringing attention to HH.
I was just diagnosed in November and am up to 1 mile (walking slowly)!

    Thanks, and best of luck!

Take care in all that sand.

  • Hi Aran,

My husband and I have disagreements over the difficulties of certain sports compared to cycling.  I can never convince him that anything is harder than the Tour de France.  Well I think your marathon may have silenced him. He wouldn't concede it at first so I sent him that power point presentation and he did admit that your marathon is more grueling.  How could he not?  Besides many of the differences between the two races which I could cite as luxuries for those Tour de Francers, those cyclist aren't sleeping in a desert without running water.  (That was the one thing that grabbed my attention - I can live without many of the luxuries that electricity provides - for a short time anyways - but take away my running water and I am checking into a hotel).  Good luck and I ordered my husband a t-shirt to wear cycling.  I am sure he will love it.

I also have a brother who has HH like myself and he has really been struggling with exercising while being deironed.  I sent him your story and it gave him hope that he wont always feel so bad and he will eventually have some normalcy in his life.

    Good Luck!

    Pat

  • Aran:

The T-shirt is really colorful and will stand out for attention.

  • Aran:

You truly are an inspiration for a lot of people with Iron Disorders. To see how you have overcome the effects of Hemochromatosis stands as a shining example for so many. You have shown there can be better days ahead and there is no price that can be put on the value of hope. Good luck on the Marathon.

  • Aran:

I wish you nothing but the best of luck and smooth sailing during this grueling race. For the life of me, I cannot imagine why anyone would want to do this, especially after seeing the photos from last year. My feet hurt just thinking about it!!!!!!!! I am extremely proud of you, fighting back from illness, keeping up a training regiment that enables you to participate in this race, and most of all for helping promote “Iron in Balance”. We need all the help we can get to get the message out and you, my friend, are da' man!!!!!! Good Luck and Be Safe!!!!!

  • I just visited the web site and wanted to wish you all the best. We are all thinking about you here at T. Rowe.

    Tom Morelli

  • Hello Aran,

I have certainly enjoyed watching your presentation and can hardly believe all that you had to endure to finish that race. Just looking at those pictures of your feet made mine hurt, can't even imagine the pain you must have experienced. The pictures certainly tell the story. You certainly are a very special person to have done this once and then to do it again..wow! That looks like the ultimate test of endurance. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. We do appreciate all you have done to bring about awareness about HH. You are a sure fire winner no matter what position you place at the end of the race.

    Stay safe and Good Luck.
    Rita Berasley

  • Aran,

Both of us wish you the best on your second run in the desert. Good luck, and keep hydrated!

    Lorrie & Art Smith

  • I'm told this website page is ready to accept postings - I think I'll "take her out for a run around the block"!! We're very excited for you. We're counting down the days till your departure, it won't be long until you're once again in the desert. We'll be watching the stars and sending you our warmest thoughts - you look up at night and catch yourself a hug!

We're so proud of you, and appreciate so much what you do on our behalf. The funds you raise for educational materials provided to HH patients by IDI pales only to the value of the inspiration you give. That my friend, is immeasurable.

Those who say "it can't be done" Aran, had just better get out of your way. I've got my shirt on - you go get 'em Ironman!!

  • Very best wishes and much love,
    Dale & Cheryl Mellan,
